Education for Sustainability

The Global Ecovillage Network GEN Ghana is in partnership with the Gaia Education to offer education for sustainable development called the Ecovillage Design Education. (EDE)

The EDE provides a 5 dimensional concept that empowers participants with community development skills that enhances sustainability. These 5 dimensional concepts are in the economic, ecological, socio-cultural, worldview and participatory design skills in community building.

The Ecovillage Design Curriculum has a wide range of practical application and is full of innovative materials, ideas and tools that have been developed and tested in Ecovillage communities and urban transition settings worldwide. Updated regularly and now available in its 5th version, the Ecovillage Design Edcation (EDE) Curriculum is available for free, for personal use only, i.e. not for resale at a profit. Ghana has held its first Ecovillage Design Education (EDE) at the Kumasi Institute of Tropical Agriculture, KITA in Kumasi. There were 43 participants at the EDE that developed 8 Eco-Strategies for promoting Ecovillages at the local levels.


The second EDE was held at the Ghana Permaculture Institute based in Techiman. There were 30 participants who implemented most of the 8 Eco-Strategies developed at the first EDE in KITA.
